About
Tacoma Rail is one of three operating divisions of Tacoma Public Utilities (the other two are Tacoma Power and Tacoma Water). Tacoma Rail is municipally owned, but is different from other City departments in two significant ways. First, it is governed by the Public Utility Board, a non-salaried, five-member board that is appointed by the City Council. Second, Tacoma Rail is 100% self-supported. Operating expenses are covered by freight revenues paid by customers using our services. There is no taxpayer subsidy. In fact, Tacoma Rail is a taxpayer, with 8% of its gross earnings going to the City’s General Fund and 1.5% to the state of Washington.
Tacoma Rail’s more than 100 employees provide service 24 hours a day, seven days a week to handle all of the responsibilities of any common carrier railroad, including track inspection and maintenance, locomotive maintenance, customer service and administration.
